GRANBY — Granby will be the fourth stop on the 2012 Ride The Rockies, the popular bicycle tour of the Rocky Mountains.

About 2,000 cyclists will participate in The Ride The Rockies tour, which takes six to seven days. It is a non-competitive event open to cyclists of all ages, and riders are encouraged to ride at their own pace.

Riders will come into Granby from Leadville and will leave Granby via Trail Ridge Road to Estes Park.

Laurie Findley, interim executive director of the Granby Area Chamber of Commerce, attended the launch party in Boulder on Saturday, where organizers announced the towns they chose for this year's ride.

“This was the first time they did an announcement party,” said Findley. “I had so many people come up to me to say what a great host city Granby was last year and what a great experience they had. I was proud to represent Granby.”

The benefits the ride will bring to Granby include publicity and a positive economic impact. Cyclists in 2011 spent an average of $250,000 in a 24-hour period in each town, and many cyclists will return as tourists at a later date, according to organizers.

"This year we wanted to combine six iconic rides into one rare and beautiful week of cycling,” said Chandler Smith, Ride the Rockies tour director. “Whether it's from Carbondale to Leadville over Independence Pass or Granby to Estes Park over Trail Ridge Road, each day is worthwhile all by itself. Together, they make for one wild ride.”
